The overall aim of this project is the development of a supervisory system for surface quality and production performance of flat steel production based on the results from automatic surface inspection systems (ASIS). To achieve this ambitious target at first a performance monitoring system for ASIS has to be developed, capable of assessing ASIS results objectively, to guarantee sufficient performance at any time and ensure reliable and comparable surface inspection data. The certified ASIS data will serve as basis for the development of a modular supervisory system ensuring maximum flexibility and extensibility. Special key performance indices related to surface quality will be defined to monitor continuously the performance of the investigated plant. These measures will be used to monitor the performance of the line and to inform the operator immediately in case of malfunctions. In addition to this local solution some global components will be integrated in the supervisory system: • By combination of the ‘surface quality performance indices’ of more than one line, a performance monitoring system for the whole processing chain will be realised. • Using different mapping algorithms a system for automatic root cause analysis will be implemented and an advisory system will be developed. • The integration of the reliable data in an existing decision-support system will improve its accuracy significantly and pave the way for the future development of an ‘automatic coil release’ application.
